WCAU News Director - Not One of Vai's Guys?

According to sources at WCAU, the sportscast during the 5 p.m. news has changed from the traditional scores, news, and highlights to features and off-beat stories, as part of a plan to hold on to more female viewers in that timeslot.  Meanwhile, the 4 p.m. segment, which previously was only a "Sports Minute," has turned into the early-evening regular sports segment.  Sources say the changes in the sports segments are one part of WCAU's decision to shift the direction of its 4 p.m. and 5 p.m. shows as a reaction to the fall's competition from CBS-3's upcoming 4 p.m. news show and the move of popular "Dr. Phil" from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.  According to a station source that spoke on the condition of anonymity, "5 p.m. is more conducive to a sports audience.  It doesn't make sense to give serious sports at 4 p.m. when it is mostly a female audience.  WCAU, which only allots a minute and a half of sports at 6 p.m. and less than three minutes at 11 p.m. airs one of the least amount of sports among the broadcast stations. When reached by phone, WCAU news director Chris Blackman confirmed that the 5 p.m. sports segments' focus has changed, but denied that it had anything to do with "Dr. Phil."  Sports director Vai Sikahema could not be reached for comment.

Kobe Update

According to Los Angeles advertising executive and Levittown native Alan Berkes, the L.A. media hasn't gone over the top during the Kobe Bryant situation the way the Philadelphia media did during Allen Iverson's legal troubles last summer.  Berkes, who runs the ad agency "The Ballpark" said, "Most of the media coverage has been critical of the arrest being made without charges. There certainly isn't a feeding frenzy at all.  I don't think it will be taken too seriously unless charges are filed.  Nobody here wants this to be true. Kobe is one of the good guys and we want it to stay that way."

"Way Beyond the Glory"
Just like when the "E! True Hollywood Story" needed two hours for the Whitney Houston/Bobby Brown story, Fox Sports Net needs an extra hour to explore the life of Mike Tyson in its first-ever two hour "Beyond the Glory" Wednesday at 8 p.m.  For the first time since the infamous Barbara Walters interview of 1988, ex-wife Robin Givens speaks about Tyson.

Right Host, Wrong Name
Jamie Foxx will have to change his last name for one night when he hosts the ESPYs on ESPN July 16.

Steve Carlton was on to Something
Former designated "Lefty" catcher Tim McCarver will broadcast his 13th Major League Baseball All Star Game Tuesday at 8 p.m.

This is My Idea!
Court TV will air the battle over who caught Barry Bonds historic 73rd home run in "The System:  Crying Foul" Monday at 8 p.m.  Since there are so many legal battles and troubles in the world of sports there should be a television show like "Celebrity Justice" which focuses on battles of celebrities.  A show could be done today about Dusty Baker, Kobe Bryant, and Damon Stoudamire.

WNBA All Star Game
ABC airs the "WNBA All Star Game" tomorrow at 4 p.m.   Did anyone know a season was being played?

Stark forsakes Stork
Melissa Stark, who a couple weeks ago announced she was leaving "Monday Night Football" because she was having a baby in September, has joined "The Today Show" as their national correspondent effective immediately. Makes me wonder what the real reason was that she left "MNF?"
