Sikahema becomes a bigger hit off the field

Vai Sikahema wasn't a starter in his NFL career with the Eagles, Packers and Cardinals, but today he is first-string as the weekday sports anchor for WCAU.

Sikahema, 40, began his television career by working for stations in St. Louis, Phoenix, and Green Bay while he was a player. Drafted in 1986 out of Brigham Young University by the then St. Louis Cardinals, he was quickly noticed by the NBC affiliate in St. Louis. When the Cardinals moved to Phoenix in 1988, the former Mesa, Ariz., resident was sought out by every television station in town "since I was the hometown kid who made good."

By the time Sikahema joined the Eagles in 1992 after a one-year stint in Green Bay, his resume tape was full. Sikahema was hired for WCAU's "The Randall Cunningham Show." Shortly after he retired from the NFL in 1994, he became the weekend sports anchor. In 1996, Sikahema was promoted to weekdays where he's been ever since.

With his smooth delivery and non-traditional football player size - he stands only 5 feet 8 - it's easy to forget that Sikahema played the game.

A native of the South Pacific island of Tonga, Sikahema is an active member of his Mormon church in South Jersey. Sikahema and his wife of 19 years, Keala, have four children - sons 17, 14, and 13 and a daughter, 9.

Last laugh

Things are getting testy between new WMMR 93.3-FM morning host Joe Conklin and his former station, WIP 610-AM. According to an industry source, Infinity Broadcasting attorneys have sent a "cease and desist" letter to Conklin's camp over bits that the impressionist carried over from his days at WIP.

Conklin and new Infinity marketing manager Drew Hilles had "no comment." Conklin's agent, Steve Mountain, and WIP 610-AM operations manager Tim Sabean were not available for comment.

Questioning the questioners

Comcast SportsNet "Sixers Post Game Live" host Michael Barkann blasted his fellow members of the media for not asking Allen Iverson why he was late for Game 6 of the Sixers-Pistons series Friday night. But was quick to add that CSN colleague Dei Lynam wasn't at the press conference or she would have asked.

That's leads to the question, why wasn't Lynam there?

"Dei is normally in the interview room for Larry Brown and A.I. and does locker room," Barkann said. "On that night, she was in the locker room during A.I. and Larry because she wanted to make sure that she got all the interviews she needed before the players left, possibly for the summer.

"In hindsight, should we have had a producer in the interview room? Probably. But that said, the question still should have been asked by the assembled broadcast and print."

Engaging story

Congratulations to Comcast SportsNet anchor Leslie Gudel, who became engaged this week to Pennsylvania State Trooper Jamie Kemm. Since Kemm works for Gov. Ed Rendell, Eagles Post Game Live co-host, maybe Gudel will start working Sundays. The wedding is scheduled for Sept. 6 in Leslie's hometown of Capistrano, Calif.
