Temple graduate Clark lands dream job on NBC10

Wallingford's John Clark is "living a dream" as the new weekend sports anchor on NBC10.

Clark, 26, a graduate of Strath Haven High School and Temple University has been covering his hometown teams for over a month, anchoring the 6 p.m. and 11 p.m. sports on the weekend and reporting during the week for Vai Sikahema's sportscasts.

After Clark graduated from Temple in 1998, he worked at the NBC affiliate in Atlantic City, then spent two years with the rich and famous in West Palm Beach, Fla. However, he always hoped to return to Philadelphia.

"My contract in West Palm Beach was for four years, but it included an 'out clause,' where I could leave after two years if a job was available in Philadelphia," Clark said. "Exactly two years into the contract, I heard there was an opening at NBC10."

Clark officially became one of "Vai's Guys," after he was selected over 100 other hopefuls by NBC10 news director Steve Schwaid.

"I always used to imitate broadcasters such as Harry Kalas, Merrill Reese, and Gene Hart," Clark said. "To actually be covering the teams I followed as a child is everything I dreamed of and more."

KANSAS CITY PRIME TIME

On Thursday night, 6ABC will be airing live from Kansas City the "Eagles 2001 Pre-Game Special" from 8- 8:28 p.m. Gary Papa and Jack Brayboys will travel to Kansas City. Phil Andrews will hold down the fort in Philadelphia.

The nationally televised game will air on ESPN with Mike Patrick, Joe Theismann, and Paul Maguire announcing.

WHAT A WAY TO START A WEEK

Seeing before and after shots of WIP's Angelo Cataldi's liposuction is not the ideal way to start the week, but that's exactly what viewers got on "Good Day Philadelphia" on Fox Monday morning.

HELLO, LARRY

Sixers head coach Larry Brown gets his own show beginning in March on Comcast SportsNet. "The Larry Brown Show" will precede 13 Sixers games leading into the playoffs.

DOCTOR IN THE HOUSE

The newest member of the Sixers is diminutive sex therapist Dr. Ruth Westheimer who is starring in a new commercial for group ticket sales.

"Dr. Ruth" said she never heard of the Sixers before she was approached to do the ads (maybe she thought the name of the team was the Sexers). But she said after she brought home the Allen Iverson bobblehead doll used in the commercial, she became a hero to her grandson.

NBA ON NBA

Next year, viewers could be watching the NBA on the NBA channel. The league is considering teaming up with AOL Time Warner to launch its own cable network when its current deal with NBC and TBS/TNT expires at the end of this season.

CAN SCHILL SHILL?

Will Curt Schilling's thrilling performance in the World Series lead to endorsement opportunities? Not likely, says Alan Berkes of "The Ballpark," a sports advertising agency in Los Angeles.

"Beyond the sports world, most pitchers aren't very marketable. They tend to be less 'athletically' built, because technique means more than power. The public likes the long ball and those players tend to be better built, better looking, and more heroic," Berkes said.

In other words, it looks like Mike Piazza will continue to get the Claritin job.

TOLLEY HONORED

The March of Dimes thinks Fox-Philadelphia's Don Tollefson is a "good guy," as he was named the 2001 Media Person of the Year at their awards banquet hosted by Michael Barkann of CSN Monday. Flyer Keith Primeau, Sixer Aaron McKie, Phillie Nelson Figueroa and coach of the year, Larry Bowa of the Phillies were also recognized by the charitable organization.

SAUNDERS ON ICE

Look for Eyewitness News Anchor Denise Saunders to deliver news updates during sister station UPN57's telecast of the Sixers and Flyers games this season. The arrangement is part of the two sister stations' partnership which also provides weather updates in prime time for UPN viewers and new updates during daytime programming.

TIDBITS

There's no off-season for Phillies announcer Harry Kalas. He narrates the highlights of "Inside the NFL" on HBO each week. ... Kobe Bryant was named one of the 25 sexiest men in entertainment on an E! special recently. ... Van Earl Wright of the Fox Sports Network "National Sports Report" spoofed Bobby Knight by throwing a chair and head-butting a co-worker on a recent telecast.
