Comcast SportsNet’s Derrick Gunn is having a blast firing questions to the Eagles as the reporter for “Post Game Live” following every game.  “The last two seasons have been a joy,” said Gunn of following the playoff-bound Eagles.  “D-Gunn,” has the enviable job of talking to the players after victories, and the not-as-fun task of doing the same after losses.  Where the viewer has become accustomed to the cliché question followed by the cliché answer, Gunn never shoots blanks.  To his credit, he manages to inject some humor into his chats, even pulling a “Joan Rivers,” with some fashion commentary on the players’ fancy duds.

With all of his broadcasting experience pre-Comcast as a sportscaster at local news stations, Gunn, an original hire of CSN, loves being part of an all-sports network.  “There is no comparison.  It is an ideal situation.  I have sportscaster friends calling me all the time for jobs,” he laughed.  Before he arrived in Philadelphia, Gunn, 43, spent ten years at WPXI-TV in Pittsburgh and also worked in San Diego, California and his hometown of Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

A star running back and centerfielder in high school, Gunn began his college career at the University of Wisconsin, but before the start of his sophomore year his mother suddenly died of pneumonia. Gunn moved to California where he went to Junior College and met his wife Patricia.  Despite offers to play football at the University of Tennessee and Florida State University, Gunn stayed in California where he played in the MexiCali baseball league for a season.  However, career-wise, “I had no idea what I wanted to do,” said Gunn.  A former teacher and coach from his junior college helped him get a job at a small station in El Centro, California (169th largest market).  “Four days later, I was the new sportscaster there.”

Today, Gunn and his wife live in Wilmington, Delaware with their daughters Ana Lisa, 14 and Cristina, 11, and son Jordan, 10.

ESPN Radio celebrates its tenth anniversary this month.  Though ESPN Radio has 195 full-time affiliates across the country, there are no stations in Philadelphia.  WTTM-AM 1680 in Princeton, NJ is the closest ESPN Radio station.

Former Flyers announcer Mike Emrick (1987-88 through 1992-93) will be calling hockey at his fourth Winter Olympics during the Salt Lake Games on NBC next month.  Emrick will team with Joe Micheletti on men’s games and Lisa Brown-Miller on women’s games.  Emrick also handled hockey play-by-play duties for CBS at Albertville in 1992 and on CBS and TNT at Lillehammer in 1994 and Nagano in 1998.
