From Dawn Patrol to Soul Patrol
It was a whirlwind 36-hours for WIP 610-AM's Rhea Hughes last weekend, as she debuted as the sideline reporter for UPN 57's telecasts of Philadelphia Soul games.
"It was a blast, but I was petrified," said the seven-year veteran of the WIP morning show.

Hughes filed two reports a quarter from the stands (the title sideline reporter is a misnomer because in Arena football there is no sideline), and conducted halftime interviews for the broadcast, which earned a 2.1 rating/4 share on Sunday.

Hughes traveled to Dallas, Texas Saturday evening for the Soul/Desperado game.

"I arrived in Dallas around 10 p.m., we had a production meeting until midnight, and I was up at 6 a.m. with some pre-game nerves.  I arrived at the stadium at 12:30 and kickoff was at 3 p.m."

After successfully completing her first telecast, Hughes enjoyed dinner with team co-owner Jon Bon Jovi and others, then flew back to Philadelphia on a private jet for eight people along with co-owner Craig Spencer.
Hughes laughed, "So this is how the rich people live."

Arriving back in Philadelphia around midnight, Hughes stayed up since she had to be up for her WIP job at 3 a.m.

"That's why I drink those 24 oz. Cups of coffee," she said.

Hughes, who has been filing live reports on Eagles games for years on WIP-AM, had no trouble adjusting to the Arena style of play.  "I actually watched Arena football on television last year.  I'm a football degenerate," Hughes joked.

The next Soul game is tomorrow vs. the Columbus Destroyers at the Wachovia Center at 7:30 p.m. on UPN 57.

More Moonlighting WIP-ers
WIP's Glen Macnow, co-author of "The Great Philadelphia Fan Book," will be writing another book with WIP colleague Angelo Cataldi called "The Great Philadelphia Sports Debate."  It will take some of the all-time arguments in Philly sports and do a point/counterpoint on each one.  It's due out in the fall.  Macnow's co-author on "Fan," Anthony Gargano could not do the book because he is currently working on a television pilot and screenplay.

Moonlighting CSN-er
Comcast SportsNet anchor/reporter Dei Lynam steps onto the live stage when she reads from "The Vagina Monologues" at Resorts Hotel and Casino in Atlantic City for one-night-only tomorrow at 8 p.m.

Congratulations to CN8 sports reporter and anchor Gregg Murphy and his wife Denise who welcomed new baby Colin to the family on January 20.  Colin joins daughter Quinn, 5, and son Matthew, 2.  In an email, Murphy reported that all will be future St. Joe's Hawks.  No he's not a front-runner.  Murphy is a 1993 graduate of St. Joseph's, ranked #2 in the nation in basketball.

The NBA "All Star Game" attracted 8.2 million viewers for TNT, but it was left in the dust by "The Daytona 500" on NBC, which was seen by 33.5 million viewers.  Judging from the ratings, it looks like America is more into cars than players.  Plus, cars always show up for practice.
